SUMMARY:SAPS Meeting-Garry Menendez\, 12 Common Mistakes in Landscape Design & How to Avoid Them
DESCRIPTION:September 17\nSAPS Meeting. 7 pm. Garry Menendez\,12 Common Mistakes in Landscape Design\n& How to Avoid Them \nAn area where folks are most tempted to bypass the advice of professionals is in the\ncreation of garden and landscape design. It’s true that gardening is an extremely rewarding endeavor and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with shaping a\nbeautiful space is unmatched. Unfortunately\, when it comes to choices about the\ndesign of our gardens\, we’ve all made a mistake or two. Blending his knowledge with\nhumor\, Garry Menendez will show us some common not-so-good landscaping practices\nand offer tips to help avoid them. Garry is sure to inspire you to see your property\nwith new eyes just in time for fall planting! Signed copies of his garden design\nbook\, A Home for Your Gnome\, will be available for purchase.\nGarry Menendez is a registered Landscape Architect and Professor Emeritus in the\nDepartment of Plant Sciences at The University of Tennessee. His primary areas of\ninterest include residential garden design and native plant communities. For fifteen\nyears he led study-abroad experiences throughout Europe and Japan focusing on\nhistoric gardens\, architecture\, culture\, and on-site sketching. Garry currently maintains\na small private practice emphasizing environmentally sensitive landscape design.\nHe has authored several articles featured in such publications as The Tennessee\nGardener\, Landscape and Irrigation\, and Garden Guide. Throughout his tenure\nat The University of Tennessee\, Garry received awards for advising\, writing\, community\nservice\, and teaching which included the National Alumni Association’s Award for\nOutstanding Teaching. SUMMARY:Herb Saplings-Tour of Sheridan and Stephen Nice's garden
DESCRIPTION:Herb Saplings\nTour of Sheridan and Stephen Nice’s garden\n801 Forest Ave.\, Johnson City\, TN 37601\nThursday\, August 6 at 6 pm\nSheridan’s working garden has a little of everything: veggies\, herbs\, fruits and flowers. Steve says “We still have squash\, cucumbers\, tomatoes\, berries\, melons\, figs\, grapes\, beans and peppers. Everyone should be ready to pick and eat as they tour.”\nSteve will give a 20 minute talk on chitosan\, biochar and how he is regenerating and protecting against pathogens in their garden with a glucosamine called chitosan. He will give up to 50 attendees free 32-oz bottles of Garden Shield\, made with concentrated chitosan and citric acid\, both EPA-25(b) exempt ingredients for agriculture. It is registered as an exempt pesticide in Tennessee. They are also inspected by the TN Department of Agriculture annually\, as a plant producer. Please bring a chair for the talk and a gallon freezer bag for a free biochar sample.\nTheir website is https://chitosanglobal.com. Steve just published The Chitosan Handbook\, which is available free on the website.\nSheridan says that parking on the street is fine\, and they have a circular\ndriveway that can park at least 6 cars. Still it’s good to carpool if you can.\nThey are in the middle of some plumbing work\, so they are sorry that bathrooms\nwill not be available.\nAll SAPS members are welcome to attend.\nIf rain is forecast\, the tour will be rescheduled.
